We love this little place for a nice early dinner on the weekends. Food has integrity and service is very good. Love the specials they post on social media. Glad they are gaining a good bit of ground as they certainly deserve it for their food creativity and their promotion of local farm to table as much as possible. Also, as many probably know they are super creative with their cocktails and drink selections. All around a great place to go. They do tend to get quite busy, which is why we like to stop in earlier in the day on the weekends.
Stopped in here on a whim with my girlfriend while out for a walk. Sadly the terrace wasn't open yet, but we decided to stay for brunch, and boy am I happy we did. The food was fantastic and just different enough to set it aside from other places. The brunch drinks were interesting and great too. The wait staff was awesome and knew what they were talking about. On our way out we met one of the owners and asked him about the expansion they were doing. He offered to show it to us, and was just a super nice guy. Very happy to have supported a local family establishment. Absolutely will be going back!
Wonderful food, very unique. It's called "New Nordic" - it's like a Dutch/Scandinavian/Farm to Table style of eating. They also have quite a robust beer menu, lots of tasty craft beers and ciders. The wait staff are top-notch - very knowledgeable about the menu's, both food and beer. I definitely want to go back and try the Sunday brunch next.
This was my first time at this restaurant. I have heard great things about this place and was so thrilled to go. When you first get there, it was confusing because I did not know it was downstairs, but that wasn't the reason why I gave a low rating. The food was great. I loved the variety and the uniqueness of their menu. Plus it was restaurant week, which is something I enjoy about Grand Rapids. All of us thoroughly enjoyed what we have ordered, but unfortunately the service was terrible. In the beginning our waiter/waitress was very welcoming and had wonderful suggestions especially about drinks and food. That was so helpful. As the night went on, the service and attitude of our waiter/waitress became very rude and questioning our orders. They barely checked up on us. Only asked one person out of a party of 7 of how the food was. We wanted to order one dessert to share amongst the 7 of us because we were so full but wanted to have desert to end the night well. But the waiter/waitress questioned our order in a rude way, basically giving off the vibe of why are you ordering one desert for 7 people. In my head, what is wrong with sharing a desert? We all wanted one bite. As our night ended, the bill came, the waiter/waitress literally hovered over each person as we were thinking how much tip to give. I could not help but give a higher tip than I wanted for this terrible service because I felt pressured when they were literally watching over my shoulder. Another thing, this waiter/waitress would not combine one of our bills. We wanted two of our bills to be combined but our waiter/waitress would not do that for us stating that it is not possible with their system, stating that since others have already paid it would not be possible to combine the bill when we clearly have stated that these two items were together from the beginning. Ultimately, I would love to go again for the food but definitely not for the service I have recieved today. I will have to say, it is definitely worth trying. The food is very unique to the restaurant which I loved.
There were only a few tables occupied when we were at the Svengard, so we were surprised when the staff didn't give us the expected attention. After we sat, we waited and eventually had to remind the server for a menu. The food portions appear less than other places, but tasted fantastic. The chicken and dumplings were worth the wait.Response to owner:Thanks for your quick response - I don't recall our server's name. If I do remember, I will be happy to talk to you over the phone or in person. I'm still interested in coming back, and when I do I will continue to update the review.
